Professor Yu-Zen Shen

Professor Yu-Zen Shen passed away on April 22, 2007 at age 76.
He was born on June 25, 1931 and graduated from National Taiwan University (NTU) in 1959.After finishing his pediatric residency, he became a visiting staff of the Pediatric Department at National Taiwan University Hospital (NTUH). During 1969 and 1970, he received clinical fellowship training of child neurology at University of Pennsylvanian. In 1978 he got PhD degree at Tokyo Women’s Medical University. Then he became a faulty as well as a professor of Department of Pediatrics at NTUH from 1978 to 2001.
He was a pioneer, the most eminent and gracious child neurologist in Taiwan and also an enthusiastic member of Taiwan Child Neurology Society (TCNS). In 1983, he held the first conference of Asian and Oceanian Association of Child Neurology (AOACN) in Taipei, and was a national delegate of AOACN during the period of 1983 and 2002. With his dedication, the TCNS was founded as an independent society in 1996. He had severed as the first president of TCNS from 1996 to 2002, and promoted the TCNS having several committees working on scientific program, specialist education, board examination, training center accreditation and the program of early intervention for developmental delayed child in Taiwan. He also received many awards and published many papers in the field of pediatric neurology.
He was a charismatic lecturer and outstanding teacher. After his retirement, he still devoted himself to educational activities. He was always generous and accessible to students, resident and faculty, and enjoyed hearing about new ideas. Till now, more than thirty fellowships from varied hospitals around Taiwan had been trained under his instruction.
We were genuinely surprised and greatly saddened when he succumbed unexpectedly. In addition to all that he has given us as a legacy, we will remember Professor Shen forever.
